Description of Sampson Rock of Wall Street

8vo. Pp 394; with frontis, and 3 plates. Original publisher's pictorial cloth, spine decorated in gilt, bold stamped pictorial design on upper cover. A very good copy. First edition. One of a series of novels written long before the great 'Reminiscences'. An enjoyable read with a background of railroads, ticker tapes and titans, based on the career of John D. Rockefeller. Westbrook (Wall Street in The American Novel, 1980) dismisses it all too readily: "Lefevre essentially is a local colorist with a journalist's eye for realism and a novelist's penchant for romance… The novelist's sees in only a half inch ribbon a story of sudden disaster or a fairy tale of riches…." He misses the point entirely, having neither sympathy nor interest in the market's operators or their machinations.
