The Construction of Houses is aimed specifically at those students and practitioners who require a broad understanding of building construction as part of a wider sphere of professional activity. The book is an ideal text for: Students Surveyors Estate Managers Home Inspectors Housing Managers Environmental Health Officers Estate Agents Planners Developers Valuers The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of modern construction and services. In addition most chapters contain information on earlier construction techniques to reflect the age profile of the UK housing stock. The authors, who have worked in both public and private sectors, have extensive experience of teaching construction to students at pre and post-graduate level. They also act as Building Consultants to a number of property owning organisations in the UK and are currently researching a number of areas related to Building Maintenance and Building Conservation. This fourth edition has a revised text and hundreds of revised graphics, new illustrations and photos, an additional chapter on concrete housing, and an eight page colour section showing a series of photographs of a modern housing development. This book will not improve a reader’s ability to draw detailed cross sections or recite a list of regulations or British Standards. It will, however, explain principles and practice; in so doing it should enable the reader to demonstrate a comprehensive and coherent understanding of modern housing construction and its evolution over the last 100 years.
