London. 1704. Pp 181.Pp xvi + 181 + 11. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, morocco spine label gilt lettered, raised bands, joints tender, upper split but firm. An attractive, unsophisticated copy. First edition. This work though not strictly about the markets is a fascinating account of price changes to various foodstuffs, drink, gold and silver, and labour costs between 1404 and 1700. Palgrave considers the author to be:" the first English collector of statistics of prices". An unlikely bishop, many of his sermons had an economic theme. He argued against the clipping of coinage, and described money as, 'the common measure of the worth and price of everything besides'. In this work he concluded that £5 in the fifteenth century would be worth £30, two hundred and sixty years later.
