Alliance and Leicester has launched a new savings guide to advise people on how to save money more effectively.
Recent research by the building society found that over half of British workers do not have enough money saved to support them if they lost their job, had an accident or fell ill.
A spokesman for Alliance and Leicester said: "Most of us prefer to think that ‘it will never happen to me’ but after losing a job suddenly, suffering a bad fall or becoming ill long-term, most of us would struggle to cover the cost of our regular monthly commitments.
"It is imperative that people plan for such eventualities and this guide sets out the options available to protect yourself and your loved ones should disaster strike."
According to figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), one person falls and seriously injures themselves every three minutes and someone breaks a bone every hour.
The survey found that only seven per cent of UK workers have taken out an insurance policy to protect their outgoings in the event that they lost their income.
