Alliance & Leicester unveils mobile banking plans

08 December 2006
Alliance & Leicester is to launch a new mobile banking service from the start of next year, with secure mobile phone access to current accounts on offer to the bank's customers that sign up to the new service.

The bank will allow customers access to their current accounts via a secure mobile phone link run via the Monilink network.

After registering with the service customers will be able to access mini-statements on demand and make balance enquiries from their mobiles. They will also be able to top pre-paid accounts up, with new services to be added later.

Phones will not store any sensitive information that is entered, and the service will only be accessed via a protected personal passcode.

Alliance & Leicester ecommerce director Ian Tandy said: "The mobile phone is already a central hub of people's everyday lives.

"Accessing banking details via a mobile phone is the next natural step, and one we think our current account customers will embrace."

The bank claims to have the market-leading current account at present, offering a rate of 6.10 per cent on its Premier Direct Current Account.
