Britannia offers savings accounts for canny football fans

Financially-savvy footy fans can take advantage of leading savings accounts in a new promotion through Britannia Building Society.

The Are you Red or Blue? promotion is to see Manchester United and Manchester City put their football rivalry aside to team up with Britannia to offer fans a club-branded savings account.

With a club savings account opened between now and the end of July, fans not only get to support their favourite team and net themselves a competitive financial product - they will also be entered into a draw to win prizes which include the opportunity to meet a first-team player.

"This is the first time both clubs have put their football rivalry aside to come together to offer both sets of fans a fantastic addition to an already great savings account," said Steven Falk, director of financial services for Manchester United.

Both adult and junior fans can get involved. Just £100 opens an adult account, offering a gross interest rate of 2.30 per cent, rising to 3.55 per cent on deposits of more than £5,000.

Junior savers can place just £1 in their account, getting gross interest rates of 4.55 per cent and a Special Edition passbook in their club colours.
