HSBC and First Direct scoop banking awards

Both HSBC and First Direct have been honoured with prestigious banking awards by Personal Finance & Savings magazine.

HSBC was named best current account provider of 2004 at the magazine's latest awards, whilst First Direct took first prize in the best online bank category.

Both banks were also runners up in several other categories, with HSBC named runner up for best overall customer service and coming third for best online bank.

First Direct, meanwhile, came second in the best financial product provider website category and third for best overall customer service and best current account.

"First Direct was the UK's first telephone bank and is now the most successful online bank," said Richard Kimber, chief executive of First Direct.

"We're delighted that consumers are happy with the service we provide and we'll continue to strive to offer them the best in electronic and telephone banking."

This marks the fourth recent accolade for HSBC, following three awards made in honour of the bank's variable rate mortgage.
