HSBC gets musical with new student current account

23 June 2005
All first-year students who open an account with HSBC before October 8th will win a free MP3 player to ease the stress of studying.

Holding up to 220 music tracks, the player also allows students to record up to 64 hours of lectures, or store coursework files before downloading to a PC.

The new account is intended to help students manage their finances by minimising the possibility of unexpected financial shocks.

It is the first in the UK to offer students price promise insurance - it will refund the difference on high street purchases if the same branded item is found in another store more than £10 cheaper.

It also offers a guaranteed interest-free overdraft of £1,000 for first-year students, and the lowest overall unauthorised overdraft rate in the country.

"We believe HSBC's new student bank account is the best on the market because it's been developed to recognise a rather obvious and simple fact: students need to borrow money," commented Katie Holder, head of student banking at HSBC.
