According to cash machine operator LINK, the ATM network should have had its busiest ever day just before this bank holiday weekend.
The operators of the UK hole-in-the-wall network reported that the Friday before the May Day bank holiday weekend was the busiest on record, with 19.5 million transactions at a total value of over £725 million. Link expected that record to be eclipsed yesterday (May 26).
"We anticipate that Friday, 26th May could well be another record day in many places," said LINK spokesman, Graham Mott.
"It is also the last Friday of the month and a bank holiday weekend, so people will be stocking up on cash to last them through the extra day.
"As always on bank holidays, warm sunny days fuel the appetite for cash," Mr Mott continued. "People head out for shopping or go out with friends and family, so an improvement in the weather forecast may be needed to break the record."
LINK reported that approximately 96 per cent of UK cash machine withdrawals are conducted free of charge. The operator says this is partly down to the new rules on better signage for charging machines, introduced last July, that were now being enforced. To read more about banking, click here.
