Christmas fever will see £1.65bn spent on credit cards, finds Sainsbury's Bank

22 December 2004
In the final few days before Christmas shoppers will splash £1.65 billion on their credit cards.

But that is a small fraction of the total £7.6 billion that consumers will spend in just a few days.

Sainsbury's Bank found that 424,000 people intend to spend over £1,000 on last-minute festive gifts alone.

Sainsbury's Bank's credit card manager, Lucy Hunter said credit card shopping was not something to be feared over the festive period.

"If you are unsure whether you will be able to clear your card balance in January, using a credit card that offers an introductory rate of zero per cent APR on purchases could be a great way to spread the cost," she said.

Ten per cent of people, some 3.87 million people, will put all their shopping on their credit cards, Sainsbury's found.

Just half of these plan to clear the expenditure from bills by the end of January.
