Consumers are ditching the high street and increasingly choosing to surf the internet to find the goods they want, a new survey has revealed.
Internet shoppers spent an average of £770 each last year on goods and services.
The YouGov survey, commissioned by Alliance and Leicester, found that almost 50 per cent of the 2,021 people polled had bought a holiday, flight or hotel stay online.
Meanwhile just under half of the respondents also said they bought CDs and other forms of music over the internet.
Internet shopping appears to have risen dramatically according to the study, which found that 87 per cent claimed they used online retailers far more than they did five years ago.
More than a third of those polled admitted to buying products through their computers every couple of weeks.
Alliance and Leicester's head of personal loans put the figures down to people realising that the internet can offer "greater choice, convenience and value for money".
"The British shopping experience is changing," he added.
