Alliance & Leicester eases switch and doubles switchers

Switching current account is easier for Alliance & Leicester customers after the introduction of an automated online service which speeds up the process, the bank has claimed.

The new system is four times faster, enabling some current account switches over to the bank to be completed within a week – and partially accounting for the doubling in the number of customers switching to an Alliance & Leicester current account, the bank believes.

The online system transfers permission for direct debits and standing orders across to their new bank automatically, saving time and money compared to the old paper-based labour-intensive process, which could take up to a month.

Customers are now offered "a fast and hassle-free switching process", said Mary Monkhouse of Alliance & Leicester.

Recent research from the financial comparison website MoneyExpert.com found that over a million people in the UK wanted to switch current account over the first half of this year.
