American Express: Insurance 'essential' for skiers

28 October 2005
Winter sports enthusiasts could find themselves left with a hefty bill if they do not take out the right type of insurance, says American Express.

A survey by American Express Travel Insurance found that a lot of people planning to go skiing and snowboarding this year do not have the right type of cover - and they don't even know it.

"There are hundreds of insurance policies on the market and you need to check the terms and conditions before you travel," said American Express spokeswoman Joanne Field.

Thousands of people are injured on the slopes each year and with the cost of an airlift to the hospital from French ski slopes averaging €3,000, experts warn that the right type of cover is essential.

According to American Express, people planning to do winter sports should check that their insurance covers them for the sport they are planning to do - some only cover skiing and snowboarding - and that it allows them to ski off-piste.

Some skiers are caught out and end up with huge medical bills because their insurance cover does not extend to off-piste skiing.

The survey also revealed snowboarders were six times more likely to injure themselves than skiers.
