Aviva health insurance rewards healthy lifestyles with cheaper premiums

Aviva has announced that it will reward its health insurance customers who lead healthy lifestyles by offering them discounts on their premiums as part of its new MyhealthCounts initiative.

An enhancement to its existing health insurance policies, Aviva hopes that offering financial rewards will encourage more people to live healthy lives, improving their health and their finances by saving around £180 a year.

The new addition to Aviva health insurance will come with a number of tools to help customers improve their health, including an online health check – this will provide them with a score that will be used to determine the general state of their health and whether they are eligible for a discount.

Customers stand to save up to 15 per cent on their private medical insurance at renewal, depending on the outcome of the online test, in addition to any no claims discount payable to them.

With MyHealthCounts, a 20 year old female customer could save a potential £60 on the cost of her annual premium, a 40 year old male could save £99, while a 60 year old male could knock £176 off the price of his Aviva health insurance.

The test, which scores out of possible 100 points, takes into consideration a number of aspects of personal health, such as BMI (body mass index), cholesterol, and blood pressure, alongside lifestyle choices such as smoking, diet, stress, alcohol intake, and exercise habits.

Discounted gym membership and online advice from a health coach also provide added incentives which it is hoped will encourage healthy living and improve customers' test scores.

Commenting on the new initiative, Dr Doug Wright, head of clinical governance at Aviva UK Health, says: "People often associate medical insurance wellness discounts with going to the gym but we recognise that everyone is different. Rather than adopting a "one size fits all approach" MyHealthCounts lets our customers choose the steps they take to improve their lifestyle - however big or small."

By offering the reward incentive to all customers, including those who have claimed on their health insurance policy, Dr Wright says that Aviva is "Helping them improve both their own and their financial health."
