The new policy permits travellers to return to the UK for up to 14 days during their gap year as well as offering the option of extending cover for up to 24 months for those wanting to take a longer trip.

The extended policy options also permit 'gappers' to take advantage of changes to changes in Australia's working visa regulation which now allows UK nationals to work in Australia for up to two years.

Gap is designed to offer travellers of any age the option of flexible cover for for trips of three, six, nine, 12, 15, 18 and 24 months and provides emergency medical cover of £10,000,000, personal liability cover of £2,000,000. Other benefits include cover for legal advice and expenses, accident cover, protection for cancellation and curtailment as well as cover in the event of lost of stolen bags and missed departing or connecting flights.

Joanne Field, Marketing Manager, American Express Insurance Services comments: “Over the past five years, gap insurance has been one of the fastest growing insurance products and we are delighted to be able to launch this unique, bespoke insurance product.

“Until now, gap insurance only allowed gap travellers to break their trip in an emergency. Now they can return home perhaps to see a newly born family member, take an exam or even to just quell homesickness before resuming their trip.”

Policy holder can also opt out of certain things such as lost and stolen baggage which could well be covered under their household insurance and winter sports for those just travelling to hot destinations. Other benefits include online discount of five per cent and a discount for those travelling with a European Health Insurance Card.
