Lloyds TSB predicts rise in home DIY disasters

20 April 2005
As Britain's DIY devotees dig out the dungarees in preparation for the spring bank holiday DIY season, Lloyds TSB Insurance is warning about the number of accidents caused by home improvements.

According to the insurer, home accidents are the most common reason for home insurance claims, and it expects such claims to rocket as amateur DIY enthusiasts hit the stepladder.

In an effort to prevent DIY disasters, the insurer has offered advice to those who fancy themselves as a homegrown Handy Andy.

Lloyds TSB advises DIY enthusiasts to read instructions carefully, ensure they wear protective headgear and clothing when using machines such as sanders, take their time, and know their limits - some aspects of domestic improvement, such as electrical wiring, are best left to the professionals.

"We should never forget that even one small mistake can spell disaster," said Phil Loney, managing director of Lloyds TSB Insurance.

"Home accidents are still the most common reason for home insurance claims, and if they're to be avoided, patience and preparation are an absolute must."

Having adequate home insurance is an absolute must, the insurer warns, as the last thing you want following a DIY disaster is a huge bill.
