M&S car insurance: Take care on the road this Bank Holiday weekend

30 April 2010 / by Rachael Stiles

Marks & Spencer car insurance is urging UK motorists to take it easy on the roads this weekend, as Brits head off for a Bank Holiday break.

Bank Holiday weekends mean more traffic and, consequently, more accidents, with 11 million Brits hitting the road for May Bank Holiday 2009, and M&S car insurance has some tips to help Brits' weekends stay accident-free.

Planning ahead is the key to a stress-free weekend, says M&S car insurance, to avoid unnecessary delays and ensure a safe trip to their destination.

During times like Bank Holiday weekends, drivers make longer journeys, causing more congestion and meaning there might be more tired drivers on the roads; it also means more cars are likely to overheat, making breakdowns more common.

Having car breakdown cover, or choosing a car insurance policy which includes this as standard or at a discounted rate, could avoid being stranded on the roadside this weekend.

Andrew Ferguson, head of general insurance at M&S, comments: "Busy Bank Holiday traffic can lead to a higher level of accidents and breakdowns.  Having the necessary insurance in place provides extra peace of mind to ensure worry-free Bank Holiday travel."

To keep safe and get to where they are going this weekend, M&S car insurance offers the following tips: taking out adequate car insurance and breakdown cover; planning the journey and route before setting off;  taking things to entertain the kids with on long journeys to avoid distractions to the driver; checking the car over before taking a long trip; allowing plenty of time, and keeping up to date with traffic problems or accidents by listening to a local radio station.

Mr Ferguson adds: "We are urging motorists to take adequate precautions before setting off and while driving to avoid unnecessary stress, breakdowns and causing further delays on the roads."
