Britain's retired population is increasingly taking more holidays and going further afield, research from Age Concern has found, highlighting the need for over 50s travel insurance.
Age Concern has recorded an increase in sales of annual worldwide travel insurance among its mature customers, rising sharply by 41 per cent in 2009.
This not only suggests that the over 50s are going on holiday more frequently then before, but that they are travelling to far-off destinations in record numbers.
A select few are being even more adventurous, the figures suggest, with a 20 per cent rise in the number of over 50s looking for winter sports travel insurance.
Mature Brits are also making good use of the facilities available on the internet to course the best over 50s travel insurance deals.
They are increasingly using the web to compare travel insurance quotes and applying online, with Age Concern Enterprises seeing a 35 per cent increase in web sales of travel insurance in 2009.
Commenting on the research, Joe Young, spokesperson for Age Concern Insurance Services, said: "Globe-trotting is no longer the reserve of the young. Over 65s are as likely to be travelling the world as younger generations as they search for ways to bring excitement to retirement."
And, he added "as the population ages, we predict a travel boom which will see even more mature people exploring far flung destinations.
"We are delighted that so many older people are fulfilling their travel dreams in later life."
