Sainsbury's Bank Car Insurance estimates that uninsured drivers on the road cost honest drivers almost £600 million a year in extra premiums.
The insurer's research also reveals that car insurance premiums could be reduced by around six per cent if it were made illegal for owners and drivers alike to go without adequate car insurance cover.
Sainsbury's Bank is thus supporting the recent call by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) for a law to be introduced requiring owners as well as drivers to insure their car.
"It' widely noted that around one in 20 cars on the road are driven without cover," comments Joanne Mallon, car insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank.
"We believe that the cost of car insurance may be one of the factors fuelling the problem of uninsured motorists, but this does not have to be the case. Motorists can dramatically cut the cost of their cover if they are prepared to shop around." Click here to ensure your car is covered.
