Shopping around for breakdown insurance could save you money

The late May Bank Holiday may be behind us but summer is on its way, and insuresupermarket.com is advising motorists to shop around for the best breakdown insurance cover.

According to the price comparison website, motorists could be spending a collective £1.5 billion on unnecessarily expensive breakdown cover policies.

"Don't just opt for the big two when you buy your cover, as they can cost over four times more than the cheapest comprehensive policy," said Richard Mason, director of insuresupermarket.com.

However, Mr Mason added that it is important to opt for the best value, most comprehensive cover, rather than simply the cheapest.

"Ultimately, whatever you pay for breakdown cover, it is infinitely preferable to having no cover and paying the extortionate charges for non-member call out - which can cost a one off fee of over £130 plus extra service costs in some cases," Mr Mason explained.

"But as it is so easy to shop around and compare providers, there is never really any need to pay the earth for a good comprehensive package."

The website director also pointed out that it is vital to ensure that your policy covers you for trips within Europe, if you are likely to take trips abroad in your car.
