Skiers advised on travel insurance by HSBC

02 February 2005
Skiers are being urged to check their accident insurance policy before heading off to the slopes.

As the number of Britons looking to spend time on the slopes rises, HSBC is warning both skiers and snowboarders to ensure they have adequate travel insurance or potentially face hefty medical bills.

Indeed, the bank notes that 14,000 people were injured on a winter sports holiday last year, with high costs involved.

Stephen Young, head of general insurance at HSBC, says that ski insurance is "a real case of getting what you pay for”.

“Saving a few pounds on a cheaper insurance policy can quickly look like a false economy if you end up paying thousands for medical treatment abroad. People who generally take more than one holiday a year are far better off taking out a good annual insurance policy with winter sports included.”

On average each injury cost £420, with some claims spiralling into the thousands - a difficult price to pay if uninsured.
