Tesco: Brits lazy over car breakdown cover

28 October 2005
UK motorists who fail to take out car breakdown cover could be faced with a bill of up to £65 if their car breaks down, according to a survey by Tesco.

Tesco Car Breakdown found in a survey of 128 garages across the UK that calling a garage to rescue a car from the roadside costs, on average, twice as much as car breakdown cover for a whole year.

According to the survey the most one motorist had to pay to have his car towed to safety was £500.

Head of car breakdown cover at Tesco, Allan Burns, said: "Many motorists have a tendency to take an 'it’ll never happen to me' attitude, but with thousands of car breakdowns attended every week, they could be picking up a very large bill when a garage picks up their car."

The most expensive place to breakdown in Britain is the West Midlands, where the average cost of breakdown recovery is £75.20

Tesco has teamed up with Green Car Motoring Assistance, the UK's third-largest breakdown cover company, to offer customers 24-hour car breakdown assistance from 10p a day.
