Tesco urges people to use their head with travel insurance

27 January 2005
Tesco Travel Insurance has said it welcomes calls by ski officials in Italy to make safety helmets compulsory for skiers and snowboarders.

The company found that up to one in ten young winter sports enthusiasts have had a collision on the slopes, which could result in third party injury, costly legal bills, as well as personal injury.

Despite this, research from the Foreign Office shows that more than a third of 18 to 34-year-olds on last minute skiing holidays do not adequately insure themselves.

"The message for all winter sports enthusiasts is not to put yourself at any additional risk," said head of Tesco Travel Insurance, Allan Burns.

"Skiing and snowboarding are high-risk sports, so taking appropriate precautions is essential. We encourage all skiers and snowboarders to not only take out adequate insurance but also go for extra protection by wearing safety helmets.

"It is not only important to have personal cover to protect against increasing medical costs. Just like car insurance, third part liability is also a must when you take to the slopes," he advised.
