More Brits are taking out worldwide travel insurance for long-haul trips, suggesting that they are becoming more adventurous in their travel destinations.
According to new research from Swiftcover.com, nearly one in four travel insurance policies taken out with the insurer are for long-haul holidays, compared to one in five policies five years ago.
This new-found adventurousness is also reflected in the UK's dream holiday list, which Swiftcover.com found to include a tropical island, a world cruise, exploring ancient ruins like Machu Picchu in Peru, getting off the beaten track in India or China, and an African safari.
Many Brits are also becoming more extreme in their holiday activities, with white-water rafting, driving a race car, parachuting and rock climbing featuring high on the list of things they would like to do.
Commenting on the findings, Roman Bryl, manager of travel underwriting at swiftcover.com, urges travellers to choose the right worldwide travel insurance policy for their needs. He said: "If people are venturing farther afield they do need to make sure they have the right travel insurance that covers them for more exotic destinations beyond Europe and provides adequate cover for things like medical emergencies, which can be very expensive."
Swiftcover.com points to recent events such as the disruption caused by the volcanic ash cloud and airline strikes to highlight the importance of adequate travel insurance which covers the unexpected, wherever the destination.
