Brits set to waste £1.3bn on presents no-one wants, finds Abbey

21 December 2004
£1.3 billion will be spent on unwanted Christmas presents this year, Abbey has said.

High on the list of things people do not want to receive are smellies, followed by novelty Christmas themed presents and sweets and chocolates.

Abbey points out that sometimes it would be better just to give cash, or a savings certificate.

Britons will splash out £250 each on Christmas gifts, the bank found, but 38 per cent of these will be unwanted.

"Giving money at Christmas rather a present that could end up gathering dust in the attic needn't be seen as thoughtless,” said Angus Porter, Abbey's customer director.
