Many looking to retire to Portugal, says expert

A growing number of people are looking to leave northern Europe to retire and live in Portugal, according to one expert.

Bert Snijder, owner of Alentejo Home, said that some are choosing to sell their businesses to have a "more relaxed" lifestyle in the country.

"For more and more people the attraction of Portugal is that you can still relax," Mr Snijder claimed.

Although the Algarve is highly developed and property prices have "gone sky high", he stated that other areas of Portugal provide "loads of space".

For property investors Mr Snijder recommended the Alentejo region, claiming that it has a "beautiful" coast, is easily accessible and properties are less expensive.

Property inspection firm Sunscape Properties recently predicted that the development of a new theme park, a Formula One racing track and additional golf course would help to increase tourism in Portugal by 300 per cent over the next seven years.
