TV shows boost house value

UK homeowners' love affair with home improvement programmes has added billions of pounds to the value of properties across Britain.

Shows such as Property Ladder have prompted one in five Brits to make improvements to their homes, Privilege Home Insurance has said.

The insurance provider says home enhancements have added an average value of £7,870 per home.

The most popular alterations included repainting walls, putting in new flooring, installing new kitchens and bathrooms and buying a garden water feature.

"It appears that adding value to your home is a hidden benefit of the changes people make to their homes because they have been inspired by TV shows," said Ian Parker, managing director of Privilege Home Insurance.

However, Privilege found one per cent of people experienced a drop in the value of their home once they carried out home improvements.
