angel

A provider of venture capital, usually used in relation to backers of theatrical productions.

Angels put up capital to get a show into production, and in return they get 'units'. If the show is successful, they get their capital repaid, and earn a share of profits in proportion to the number of units they own. If the show is unsuccessful, they lose the lot.
