arithmetic mean

The correct term for what most people call the 'average'. Often shortened to 'mean'.

Calculated by adding up a series of values and dividing the total by the number of values.

E.g. 1+2+3+4+5+6+7 = 28. The mean is 28 divided by 7 which equals 4.
