The Association of British Insurers (ABI) represents the collective interests of the UK's insurance industry as well as being a spokesperson for any insurance related issues relevant to its members.

The aim of the ABI is to provide support and information on areas of common interest as well as to participate in discussions on public policies and advocate the code of conduct for customer services in the insurance sector.

Formed in 1985 following the merger of the British Insurance Association, the Life Offices' Association, the Fire Offices Committee and the Accident Offices Association, the ABI now has around 400 members and provides around 94 per cent of the domestic insurance services sold in the UK and count for almost 20 per cent of investments in the London stock market.

There are four main policy departments:

  • General Insurance
  • Life and Pensions
  • Financial Regulation
  • Taxation and Investment Affairs

The ABI also has periphery sections: Research and Statistics Department, the Media and Political Affairs and European and International teams. Amongst its other activities, the ABI holds annual conferences, seminars and industry-related events as well as publishing research reports and policy documents.
