Football fans 'pay the price for loyalty'

13/08/2007
Football fans 'pay the price for loyalty' Football fans may be putting themselves in debt travelling up and down the country in order to watch their team play, it has been suggested.

Research from LV= has revealed that Sunderland supporters based in the city clock up 7,581 miles a season following their beloved Black Cats.

Newcastle United fans came second in LV='s league table, with Middlesbrough's fourth place standing suggesting a north-east bias.

But it may be that followers are paying the price for their loyalty, according to company spokesperson Andrew Beard.

"This can be a costly labour of love when you take into account season tickets, motorway lunches, match day programmes and of course petrol," he said.

This comes as research from money charity Credit Action has revealed that the average car costs £15 a day to run, while 24.5 million transactions worth £1.4 billion are made every 24 hours.
