Car Hire Insurance

Whether you are looking to rent a car, van, minibus or motor-home it might work out cheaper using a standalone rental policy.

If a rental vehicle sustains damage while it is in your hands you could be liable to pay a large excess fee, as such car rental companies tend to offer an excess waiver to help you negate the fees you would need to pay as a result. However it may work out as a cheaper to purchase rental vehicle excess cover from a standalone provider in advance.

Similarly to when you purchase European breakdown insurance, vehicle hire excess insurance can be purchased either for a specific trip of a set amount of days, or some providers offer annual policies which will cover you for all rentals, for a certain type of vehicle in a 12 month period.

Other advantages of purchasing this type of cover as a standalone product include additional benefits providers may offer bonuses cover or optional extras such as cover for mobile phone charges incurred following a loss under the policy.

You can also shop around different providers to find the best deal on cover of the level of cover that you feel fits your needs best, rather than just going with the provider offered by the rental company. As with any type of insurance remember that it may be worth spending slightly more if it means that you feel you are provided with a better level of cover.

Some things you may want to consider when looking for a provider:

  • Age limits – Some providers have a limit on the minim mum and maximum age a driver can be for the excess cover to be in effect.
  • Countries – different providers may not be able to offer you cover for driving a rental car in certain countries; therefore it is worth checking that your policy provider does include all of the countries that you know you will be travelling in.
  • Vehicle type – Some types of vehicles such as those with a larger number of seats may be excluded from a standard policy, you may therefore need to purchase a special policy for some types of vehicle. Providers can also place restrictions on the maximum age and value of a vehicle.
  • Misfueling – If you put the wrong kind of fuel into a vehicle, some providers will not include cover for this issue.
  • Key replacement – Similar to misfueling some providers may not provide cover if you lose or break the vehicle’s keys.
