Finding a current account, if you have bad credit may be challenging - it depends on your circumstances.
If you are one of the many people who have a history of debt and poor credit, you may want to consider your options. Most banks will refuse to offer you a current account if you have a registered bankruptcy, county court judgements (CCJs) or an Individual voluntary arrangement (IVA).
Alternatives to Current Accounts
There are some alternatives to current accounts that people with bad credit may benefit from considering, and which we elaborate on in more detail below.
If you are unable to find a bank that allows you to open a current account, you should consider the other options above. Remember to shop around and consider all of your options before making your final decision.
A Basic bank account
Provides you with the very basic essentials that you require from a bank account. If you have poor credit ratings and you still need access to an account this may be an option for you to consider.
A guaranteed bank account
Is similar to other bank accounts but it may benefit you if you do not wish your credit to be checked when you apply. You will be able to use the account for payments and receiving money. You may want to look further into this as an option. Make sure you do your research before you make a decision.
Prepaid cards
Can be used if you are unable to obtain a current account. Usually you request an amount to be placed on the prepaid card then you can use it for all your monthly payment requirements. To find out more you can look into prepaid cards or talk to your bank.
A post office card account
Can be used to receive benefits, pensions and tax payments. You will be required to go to your chosen post office to withdraw money or put money in. With a post office account you can pay bills, take money out for lifestyle payments etc.
