British Gas green stance applauded
23/04/2007

British Gas' decision to set up a green arm to its energy offering has been welcomed by industry experts, but some feel more can be done to encourage consumers to switch to green tariffs.
The new business, British Gas New Energy, has been designed to support homes and businesses in adopting a more environmentally-friendly stance towards energy use.
Geoff Slaughter, energy product manager at uSwitch.com, welcomed the initiative, saying British Gas was responding to consumers who were "ready, willing and able to do their bit to help tackle climate change".
However, he added that with less than one per cent of UK households on a green energy tariff suppliers must "work hard to boost take up".
In order for this to happen though, Paul Schofield, head of utilities at moneysupermarket.com, called on the leading suppliers to make green electricity more affordable.
"We would like to see the big six suppliers focus on reducing the cost of green electricity, so households have a more cost-effective alternative to their traditional energy source," he commented.
