With 16 Olympic Gold medals in Beijing, Great Britain is now third in the medal table, trailing only behind the host nation China, and the USA, and it is cycling we have to thank for almost half the medals.
The first came early on, when Nicole Cooke became the road race champion and yesterday, Victoria Pendleton won the women's sprint final and Chris Hoy took his third Gold of the Games, which gave Britain an incredible haul of eight golds from a possible 14 in track and road cycling in Beijing.
It’s a well known phenomenon that sport on TV encourages sport at home – during Wimbledon fortnight, tennis is suddenly everyone's favourite sport, and when England won the Ashes in 2005, it was cricket, cricket and more cricket all over the country.
Cycling has always been a popular sport in the UK, but with the success of the British cyclists in Beijing and the cost of having a car spiralling, people are increasingly turning to their bikes to get around, which is why it is more important that ever to make sure those bikes are properly protected.
According to new figures from Halifax, a bicycle is stolen every 65 seconds and the average claim on insurance is £337.
"One bicycle theft every 65 seconds is shocking," said David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax.
"While cycling has many benefits for people's health and also the environment, it is important that people take adequate measures to protect their cycles and also make sure they are insured, both in the home and also when out in public places," he said.
Like many insurance polices, the
Halifax home insurance includes cover for cycles, but to insure your bike when it is away from your home as well, personal belongings cover is also necessary.
