so make the most of it!

This month, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme increased the UK savings compensation limit from £35,000 to £50,000 which was welcome news to worried savers who were starting to fear for
their hard earned cash should their savings accounts provider buckle under the weight of the credit crisis.

The compensation scheme is £50,000 per financial intuition, not per bank account (separate financial institutions have separate FSA registration numbers; use our handy table to discover which brands are part of the same group) which means that as long as you spread your assets, all your cash can be safe!

And now is definitely the right time to re-organise your savings because there are some really great deals to be had at the moment.

The best idea is to go for a fixed rate account so that you can be sure to get a good rate and keep it. This is even more important following the Bank of England’s decision this week to slash the base rate by 1.5% down to 3% - the lowest rate in 53 years because banks and building societies are more than likely to start cutting their savings rates from this week, so get in while you can!

With the Alliance and Leicester e-Saver you can enjoy a rate of 6.30% and, if you have £10,000 in your account on 31 December 2008, you will be automatically entered into a free prize draw for a chance to win £10,000 cash!

The Abbey Instant Access Savings offers a great rate of 6.00% and you can start saving with just £1, while the Halifax International Fixed Rate Savings also offers a great rate of 6.50% which is guaranteed for a year.

There are also some great tax free savings deals, like the Abbey Direct ISA which offers a great tax-free rate of 5.5%. You can open it with just £1 and get instant access to your account via the internet, phone or post, anytime you want!
