Choosing a broadband provider first comes down to who is available in your area. Most areas have at least two or more competing broadband providers, making doing some research on each company highly worthwhile before any final decision is made. Many suggest putting an equal amount of effort into it as you would for an electricity, gas or water supplier.

Broadband providers can be judged on their products, their reliability and their customer service. Information on deciding on a good product in both price and features can be found in our Compare Broadband Packages section, linked on the left of this page.

Reliability and customer service however must be researched, either through gaining information directly from the company or finding other sources. Both are one of the most important aspects of a broadband provider’s service, as it’s no use having a fast and cheap broadband connection if it’s never working, or if you have to spend hours on the end of the phone arguing about being mischarged.

Many companies publish reliability and service statistics, and it is worth looking for these to get an impression of how their service compares. Other good sources include customer testimonial websites, many of which have sprung up for the larger national providers of broadband.
