The Insolvency Service is a government-run organisation which operates under a framework of legislation, such as the Insolvency Acts of 1986 and 2000. The Insolvency Service carries out a range of services and tasks related to insolvency and bankruptcy, such as: 

  • Administer and investigate affairs of those who are declared bankrupt
  • Act as trustee when no private sector insolvency practitioner is appointed
  • Establish why bankrupts and companies have become insolvent
  • Act as supervisor for individual insolvency cases
  • Conduct investigations into insolvent companies where it is in the public interest to do so
