Britons spend to spruce up the festive home

The Christmas spirit suffuses UK homes as consumers get set to spend £1.6 billion in home improvements to impress guests, according to a survey from Alliance & Leicester.
Almost two thirds of Brits will invite friends and relatives to their homes over the holiday period and an astonishing 82 per cent will overhaul the look of their home beforehand.
Twenty per cent will give their home a once-over with a paintbrush while 47 per cent plan to buy in luxury food and drink for entertaining.
Average spend on home improvement is set to top £145 per household, according to the survey.
Christmas merry-makers look for "house-perfection" to satisfy family and friends visiting over the holiday season, according to director of mortgages at Alliance & Leicester, Stephen Leicester.
But home insurance experts have warned homeowners to guard against opportunistic thieves this Christmas, who could target presents – and might be lured by new-look perfected homes.
