Dry summer increases subsidence risk, says BIBA

23/10/2006
Dry summer increases subsidence risk, says BIBA The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has warned homeowners that the number of properties potentially at risk from subsidence and heave has been significantly increased, owing to one of the hottest ever summers.

An abundance of dry weather, extending well into the traditionally autumnal months, means that subsidence and heave are posing a greater risk than ever.

Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager at BIBA, encouraged home insurance policyholders to check their cover and make sure it protects their home against such an eventuality.

"Our advice is very simple - check your policy immediately," he said. "Too many people will be left high and dry because of subsidence caused by the extraordinarily hot and dry summer.

"It is important that consumers are made aware of this problem and we are therefore advising people to ensure that they are adequately covered by their buildings insurance cover going forward."

Mr Trudgill urged those without the necessary insurance to visit a broker, who could arrange a policy at a better rate with a low excess.
