It is not normal insurance company policy to offer life insurance to cancer patients who are undergoing treatment.
The type of cancer that the patient is suffering from and its survival rate will affect whether or not life insurance companies will offer a policy.
There are certain from of cancer where patients may get life insurance at a standard premium, such as mild forms of skin cancer and prostate cancer.
The measures insurance companies will use to asses the application for life insurance are:
- The type of cancer
- The stage and grade of the cancer
- The treatment that that the patient is undergoing
Most insurance companies will not offer life insurance to cancer patients unless they are cured and at least a couple of months on from the last treatment. Some companies will not offer a policy until five years after the last treatment.
It is likely that a cancer patient will need to submit their medical records to the insurance company and the company may communicate with the relevant doctor before coming to a decision.
