If you work in the medical professional, either as a doctor, nurse or midwife, or a more specialist position like an occupational therapist, physiotherapist or pediatrician, you will need to have medical indemnity insurance.
Although most medical staff employed by the NHS are insured for the duties in their contracts, the NHS insurance does not cover everything, and many GPs are not covered, so the British Medical Association recommends supplementary medical indemnity insurance.
As well as covering for negligence claims and defamation claims, medical indemnity insurance can provide defence at disciplinary hearings as well as:
- Private medical practice
- Medical care provided when off duty
- Work undertaken for charity and voluntary work
- Working overseas
