Medical Insurance and HIV

If you are looking for medical insurance and are HIV positive, it is likely that you could face difficulties when contacting providers for insurance quotes.

Medical insurance policies are generally subject to exclusions from health complaints suffered prior to the term of the policy (defined as pre-existing conditions).  Therefore, in the case of someone who has HIV and is looking for medical insurance, it would be more difficult than usual to find an insurer willing to cover for this or any other HIV-related illnesses that may later arise.

That said, it is not impossible to find a medical insurance quote if you are HIV positive. Although it could possibly take a while to find an insurance provider willing to provide a suitable medical insurance quote, it may be worth simply going through insurers to find out if they will provide cover for you. The providers listed below will be a good starting point.

There are two main types of underwriting that insurance providers may use to provide you with a quote:

  • Full medical underwriting

This typically involves you providing information about your medical history, including full details of your HIV.  The medical insurance provider will sometimes also contact your doctor for information.  It is imperative that you are honest about any pre-existing health complaints, even though this information could affect whether or not you are offered a medical insurance quote.

  • Moratorium underwriting

You may not be obliged by your insurance provider to disclose information about your medical history.  However, for such policies, the insurer will not cover for any conditions present in the last few years (usually five).

It must also be noted that, if an insurance provider is willing to provide a quote to someone who is HIV positive, medical insurance premiums will normally be significantly higher than for the average person.
