Medical Insurance Premiums

Medical insurance premiums are the annual costs that policy holders are expected to pay insurers for their health care. In order for an insurance policy to remain valid, customers are expected to pay their premiums to insurers for the duration of a proposed agreement.

It should be remembered that insurance quotes for medical insurance premiums will vary drastically from insurer to insurer, therefore it is recommended that customers contact several different providers for a quote before committing a particular policy.

Although different insurers may choose to charge more, or less for certain types of cover, premiums are largely calculated based on statistical data and information regarding the chances of customers becoming ill and making a claim. As is the case with many other types of insurance, medical insurance quotes are calculated based upon the customers likelihood of making a claim.

There are a variety of different factors that may influence the cost of medical insurance premiums, the following are some examples of common factors that will increase the cost of premiums:

  • Age is a significant factor, the cost of insurance will usually increase once the policy holder reaches a certain age, even if they are in very good health
  • If a potential customer has a particularly dangerous occupation, their likelihood of making a claim on their insurance also increases, which will  in turn increase the cost of premiums
  • The same is also true for customers who are involved in dangerous pastimes or other hazardous recreational activities, to the point where many insurers may refuse to cover them
  • Medical insurance premiums will also be subject to a significant increase if the policy holder is smoker or heavy drinker

In order to receive the lowest possible medical insurance quote, it is advisable for customers to demonstrate that they will do as much as possible to maintain their health, and will avoid taking unnecessary risks to their health.
