HSBC bank and its online partner bank first direct have become the first UK institutions to offer customers a new platform for day-to-day banking through their mobile phones.
MoniLink is the new system developed by the UK's cash machine network operator LINK which will allow customers to access mini-statements and balance enquiries, along with many other banking features, 24 hours a day.
To access the new service, users will need to download a piece of software to their phone and, similar to online banking, once verified and registered the secure system may be used at any time.
first direct has a history of pioneering in the banking field, as it was the first UK institution to set up without a branch, and Chris Pilling, the bank's chief executive, said this latest innovation continued that trend.
"There are now more people with a mobile phone than a landline, making it the world's must-have communications device," he said.
"The launch of MoniLink supports our drive to give customers the widest choice of ways to control their money.
"We areā¦the first to introduce this pioneering mobile phone banking service, which allows consumers to top up a mobile as well as check their account balance."
