Ofgem or the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, works together with Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (GEMA) and is the regulatory body for the Government regarding electricity and natural gas markets in Great Britain.
Formed by the merger of the Office of Electricity Regulation (OFFER) and Office of Gas Supply (Ofgas), Ofgem is responsible for promoting choice and value for all gas and electricity customers and its services include:
- monitoring how much domestic consumers pay for energy
- producing regular reports on competition in the retail sector
- releasing information and data on consumer activities such as switching across to different providers
