Overdraft Fees

Overdraft fees are charges your bank makes to your account if you go over your approved overdraft limit. The overdraft fees are supposed to reflect the cost to the bank of sending a letter to inform you that you have gone over the agreed overdraft limit – a cost estimated to be around £4.50. However, many banks have been charging up to £30 for every day a customer is over their agreed limit, an amount that the Office of Fair Trading has branded as 'unfair'.

Since then, thousands have been taking action against their banks to try and reclaim the money.

To reclaim your overdraft fees, you should

  • Request details of the charges – the bank is legally obliged to give you six years worth of data
  • Ask the bank for your money back
  • If you are not happy with the offer, threaten further action
