Halifax: Do DIY by the book

The UK's largest mortgage lender, Halifax, has warned homeowners who are planning to undertake some form of property improvement in the coming months to ensure they are taking account of all the paperwork and planning permission required.
Almost half (46 per cent) of property owners in the UK indulged in some form of DIY in the past year and more than a third (36 per cent) are planning on doing so at some point in 2007.
However Mark Heaton, Halifax's head of mortgages, warned people that following the necessary procedures and regulations are important parts of the process, as it ensures that any improvements made are legal and therefore increase rather than reduce the value of the property.
"Embarking on a home improvement project is exciting and it is easy to get carried away with the organisation and planning involved," Mr Heaton said.
"However, if you don't pay heed to what legislation and regulations you must comply with they could come back to haunt you.
"With this in mind, make sure you keep all documentation regarding the work in a safe place as you may need it in the future, particularly if you decide to move house."
