If you have a Prudential Endowment or you have a policy originally taken out through a company who are now owned by Prudential e.g. Scottish Amicable and you are considering your options the following points are worth remembering:

  • Investment Performance - Falling UK inflation has been a factor in lower investment returns. In addition there have been a number of global events that have affected stockmarkets both in and outside the UK over the last 6 years e.g. 9/11
  • Interest Rates - While investment returns have generally fallen over the last 6 years interest rates have also fallen which has meant that that fif you have been using your Prudential Endowment to pay off a mortgage, monthly repayments will have been lower over the same period.
  • Changes in Tax treatment - Changes in tax legislation over the years has seen the removal of tax relief on mortgage interest repayments.

Prudential has approximately 216,000 mortgage endowment policies in force most of which were sold in the 1980s and 1990s. The company stopped selling mortgage endowment policies in January 2001. Scottish Amicable has approximately 501,000 plans in force but withdrew from the mortgage endowment market in April 2001. If you are considering cashing in your Prudential Endowment or Scottish Amicable policy as well as getting a surrender value quote from Prudential you should also get a no obligation Endowment Quote to see if you can sell your policy.
