Santander breakdown cover is not currently available as a standalone product. Santander do not directly offer their own breakdown cover service, Santander customers of their vehicle insurance policies do however currently have the option of purchasing breakdown cover from the RAC as an optional extra.

While Santander breakdown cover as a standalone option is not available, if you are looking for a standalone breakdown insurance policy there are a range of providers, one of which might be able to offer the right plan for you. When comparing policies in addition to considering things such as price you might also want to factor things into your decision such as;

  • Average response time
  • Number of vehicles
  • Customer ratings
  • Exclusions – some providers may not offer cover for certain types of vehicle or vehicles over a certain age

Level of cover

Providers of vehicle breakdown cover tend to offer policies in different price bands, with varying levels of cover, so you don’t have to pay for cover you feel you don’t need. The names and features of these different insurance bands will vary by provider but may include:

  • Roadside assist:  often the most minimal level of cover available generally provides a certain amount of time worth of free roadside labour and if the vehicle cannot be repaired there and then, you will be towed to a nearby garage.

  • Home assist: As basic roadside packages tend to exclude cover for breakdowns that occur within a close proximity to your registered home address, you may need to purchase a home assist package with your policy if you want to be covered for breakdowns that happen close to your home or if your vehicle won’t start when leaving your address.

  • Recovery – If the vehicle cannot be fixed at the roadside, then having a recovery package in place often means you get the option of you, your passengers and vehicle being recovered to any single location of your choice in the UK.

  • Onward Travel – Onward travel packages mean that in addition to recovery the policy provider may be able to offer you with alternative means to continue your journey if the vehicle cannot be fixed, this varies by provider but could include; the provision of a hire car for a set period of time or being put up in a nearby hotel for the night while your vehicle is repaired.

  • European cover – European cover plans mean that if your car breaks down elsewhere in Europe than the UK then you will still be provided with breakdown cover.
